TeachMe: 1st Grade

 

 

Bottom Line: An absolute must-download. An awesomely unique, well-done and extremely deep app for just 99 cents. Buy a stylus!

There is A LOT to like about TeachMe: 1st Grade. The app poses questions in reading, addition, subtraction and spelling, the latter three of which have to be written to be entered, a feature I have not seen in any other educational app of this kind. (And the writing recognition is excellent.)

Mimi Mouse, the host/teacher, presents the questions that must be answered correctly to proceed. The app is very helpful if the child needs assistance. For example, when it asks what is 5-1, five boats are displayed with a trash can that, when pressed, removes one of the boats, leaving four that can be easily counted for the correct answer.

Every three correct answers (a number that can changed in the options) yields a coin reward for the child that can be spent on stickers for a number of different scenes or for fish in an animated aquarium! My six-year old was all about the aquarium.

The app even goes the extra mile when the child gets a wrong answer. I answered that 1+1=7 and Mimi told me that my answer was too high and when I tried again an outline of a 2 was in the answer line to help me out. Great stuff.

There is also a screen where parents can track their child’s progress and the ability for more than one child to play (and be tracked) at a time.

I could really go on and on, but hopefully you get the idea. It's a terrific app.

What happened to .99 cents?

Hi Richard,
This review was published in April 2011 and only the Apps developer has control over the pricing. It was correct at the time of publishing and it is not uncommon for developers to have a special introductory price and specials throughout the year. Even at $1.99 the TeachMe apps are still very good value for money.
