Boy, do I like this app! It's the story of a frog who eats letters so he can buy cool clothes.
In Licking Letters, children must spell basic words by using Hoppy The Frog's tongue to capture letters passing above him. Since the 3-5 letter word is a "target" (spelled ahead of time) and the frog simply has to be pressed to make it work, the app is perfect for the toddler/preschool set.
If the child snags the wrong letter, Hoppy just emits a quick "uh-uh" to tell them to keep trying, so there is nothing discouraging for a younger player. There are also four mini-games which provide more opportunity to earn spending money.
Licking Letters HAS a ton of personality. Hoppy The Frog's narration is terrific and funny. The animation is smooth and the interface is well-done and easy to follow. There are 150 different words to spell, so the replay value is high.
Up to three children can save their name and progress per device and there is a setting that can be changed to determine whether the word has to be spelled in the correct order or not.
At just 99 cents, I highly recommend Licking Letters for children learning their letters up through those learning to read basic words. For more information, check out the app's Facebook page.
