So, when I'm reading an ebook with Lily and the story includes a funny cat, riding shotgun in a Volkswagen van, who comes upon some kangaroos and calls them "fat rabbits," I sit up and take notice.
There's also hip-hop musical number in the van and a song about how awesome kebabs are. Kebabs!
Lulu in Australia is a really fun, humorous, and informative story of a girl traveling across the outback. Readers get to surf on Cactus Beach, throw a boomerang, take pictures in front the Sydney Opera House and more.
All of the music is original and that's one of the main reasons this app stands out from the pack. There is a map of Australia that can be accessed at any time that allows navigation to specific parts of the story (and country) directly.
There are animals and activities on every page, and the app can be read in English and French. The app also includes an animal jumble game where animals are divided into three parts and must be descrambled.
The words are not highlighted when read and there isn't an option to have the words pronounced when pressed.
Many kids apps are really mundane (why so serious?), so it's a refreshing change to find one with a great sense of humor. For me Zazou really steals the show. "I come from my house! Why do you want to know!?"
Zanzibook is planning more adventures for Lulu and Zazou as they travel to other parts of the world, and I look forward to their continued adventures. Highly recommended!

Thanks very much for your reviews and recommendations. I really enjoyed going through this site this morning. In a good but unexpected way, I spent $15 before I knew it on apps for my preschooler! Thanks again.
