Bottom Line: Great Build-a-City puzzle app with lots of interactive extras from the makers of Puzzingo.
Stack ‘N Puzzles – Kid’s Puzzle Adventure Game from 77Sparx Studio has a lot going on to keep a toddler’s attention. Stack refers to a big-toothed, paddle-tailed beaver that is the city’s tour guide. Youngsters outfit a series of city buildings and vehicles by sliding objects associated with each into their black (puzzle) outline. Pieces such as the wheels to the fire truck all have their names written under them. As each piece is touched, it makes a honk, beep or clang and Stack calls out its name.
The app is easy and intuitive enough for even a two-year old to play independently. Pieces are stored in a toolbox and appear in small groups when the box is tapped. If the child is having a bit of difficulty, a black arrow comes up for a rather obvious hint. This help feature keeps frustration to a minimum and ensures the activity remains fun and engaging. The focus of the app switches between outfitting city buildings like a school, fire house and museum and vehicles like a fire truck and school bus.
Some of the objects presented are obvious like hose and wheel. Others are more obscure like climbing arc. Learning dinosaur names is quite common among toddlers, but the concept of a museum curator may a bit foreign.
The beauty of this puzzle concept is that it incorporates a variety of activities and learning styles to work on visual-spatial relations, manual dexterity and language. Kinesthetic learners will love this app as there are countless opportunities to learn by doing. Once puzzles are completed, the child gets a chance to drive the vehicle around the city to capture a T-Rex on the loose, put out a fire, or pick up school kids from the museum. Toddlers also have ample opportunity to experience cause and effect with endless bubble popping.
77Sparx has done a great job of fully engaging a toddler’s senses with Stack and his city. They picked up where Puzzingo left off and added a dynamic environment for creative play. If only they could replicate the smell of the fire and the taste of the mystery meat special served at the schoolhouse cafeteria...
