Today's second GFAOTD is Abacus in Augmented Reality by @Reks!
Developed in response to parent requests for a lifelike Abacus, this iPad-only app is the latest offering from long-time page supporter, @Reks. The app seeks to replicate the feel of a real Abacus as much as possible, so the beads move when the iPad is tilted, they 'clunk' when they touch the sides of the abacus and each other, and the abacus itself is 'transparent'. In settings, a parent or teacher can take a picture to customize the background as well as change the number of bars shown and the color of the beads.

Abacus (or soroban) helps a learner develop ability to do the arithmetic calculations MENTALLY. The learner converts the numbers into beads, manipulates the beads, and brings out the result.
It enables learners to
1) understand the basic number systems;
2) understand concepts of carrying and borrowing in arithmetic;
3) understand combinations of 5 and 10 and complements of numbers;
4) visualize close relations between numbers and numerals, and
5) develop learners’ ability to perform mental calculations.
