When I saw that Elly Book 2 had gone free, I knew my son would never forgive me if he found out I hadn't shared it with you.
There are currently 11 apps in the Elly the Reindeer series. My son Oliver loves them and so do I. Elly and her friends who include Finn (also a reindeer), Aapo (a boy), Harry Hare and Owl, are all recurring characters in these gentle stories centred around seasonal or life events. In this one, appropriately enough for this time of year, Elly and her friends go to school for the first time.
The illustrations are simple, the interactivity is minimal and words are not highlighted when read, but the characters are endearing, the stories are sweet and well suited to children who are pre or early readers and the narration (by the author's niece) is pitch-perfect.

From iTunes:
Elly receives a mysterious note from an 'O' to attend school by the old oak tree, but who is this 'O' in the note, and will Elly and her friends find out ? This delightful adventure is the second in the Elly the Reindeer series and is ideal as an early reader for children everywhere.

If you haven’t heard about Elly before, make no mistake: this is nice and calm series of book apps, a must have on your iDevice for kids from 1 to 5 (maybe even older depending on the kid) if you like to read to them at bedtime. (24/1/2011)

Among the incredible sound bursting, flashy motion interactive apps out there, a safe and cozy space is saved for the simple and lovely ebooks like Elly the Reindeer. With the new ‘Snowy Day’ there are now 6 Elly the Reindeer books out there, all very simple and very lovely. It may look too plain for toddler’s parents but don’t get fooled. There is still no better reading on the iPad at bedtime than the Elly series. A must have, all 6 of them. (13/10/2010)

I think “Elly Book 5” and the entire “Elly the Reindeer” series in general are wonderful choices to read to even the youngest child who may have a short attention span or be overwhelmed by sounds, movements, and the tapping you find in other apps.

Every day we pick what we affectionately call the Good Free App of the Day, an app that we have downloaded, tested and certified: It can't have a ton of ads or just a little content with a ton of in-app purchases.
It also has to be good.
We then present them to you to read, download, and share and, based on which ones got the most hits, here are your Top 100 Favorite Free Apps!
We've done our best to only include apps that are permanently free, but sometimes developers do change their minds so please leave a comment if you find an app that's no longer free.
Enjoy!
