The opening menu gives you a number of options. Channels hold all the items that a user has created and added to Historypin, including individual photos, collections and tours. You can contribute a photo to Historypin using the 'Post a Photo' option - digitise old pictures, contribute modern views of historical sites or even, using your iDevice's camera and augmented reality mode, overlay a vintage picture over its modern background.
The picture of Times Square above is an example of an augmented reality shot.
Select Maps and search for a town or city. The view on the left shows Toronto, my current home, and the pins shown are the vintage pictures that have already been added to the Toronto map. You can narrow the timeframe you want to look at using the date slider bar just above the map.
Tap on a pin to look at the pictures in that area. This scene from 1912 is just up the road from where I live. The streetcars still run but we don't see horse drawn carriages often. Ever, actually.
The bank is still there but it's now a Starbucks. Before you bemoan that fact, I'm quite sentimental about that Starbucks as it's where my partner and I first met.
You can browse or search Channels to see what certain individuals or institutions have contributed. Here I can see that the Hamilton Public Library has a channel - they have contributed a lot of photo collections to the database.
Or you can browse Collections if you want to find material by topic. I think 'The Facial Hair Through Time Collection' may be of interest to one of my fellow SAFK team members.
The Tours option is brilliant. For example, if you ever find yourself in Reading (a town I also used to live in), you may want to follow in the footsteps of the Prince of Wales, who visited the town in 1926.
Not the current Prince of Wales obviously, but the man who first became Edward VIII and then gave that up to become the husband of Wallis Simpson. Every step on the tour is illustrated with a picture of him visiting each location. Absolutely fascinating.

This sounds like a really interesting app, Deanne. My son loves history so I may give this app a shot!
