I have to confess that I'm not a fan of real-life hamsters (traumatic childhood experience) but I DO like Bugsy, the chubby blue cartoon hamster in a few of the apps from Peapod Labs.
Normally $2.99, Bugsy Kindergarten Math is FREE until October 31st.
** Only the app's developer can control when an app is free or not. All apps that we post as Good Free Apps of the Day are verified to be free at the time of this post. We make no guarantees otherwise. **
Parents and teachers - when you open this app you will note that you can create an account which enables you to receive progress reports emailed to you so you can keep track of how your child is doing, you can set up profiles for more than one child and if you have more than one idevice you child's account will sync across all of them.
Bugsy starts off in an empty fridge - it's cold in there and he's hungry. This is where parents and teachers can access the settings to customize the learning for each child based on their skill level.
When ready, your child can send Bugsy down to the lower level where he can shop for food by playing math games.
There are conveyor belts where you can correlate numbers to quantities of food items. There are also sums and the difficulty of these adjusts based on your child's performance.
Answering questions correctly results in Bugsy putting a food item in his shopping cart. At the end of each game your child picks a food for Bugsy to bring back up to stock his fridge.
Your child also gets the chance to practice tracing numbers, identifying quantities and working on pattern recognition.
The app is engaging, fun, customizable and developed by an early childhood development expert. Well worth downloading if you have a child who is working on attaining math skills at this level.
