Monster Hunt is from Innovative Mobile, the developer behind some of my favourite apps produced under the Grasshopper and Alligator app brands.
This app is a memory game - at first it looks like one of those matching pairs games but it's not, it's actually a nice twist on the usual format, has single and multiplayer modes, spooky music, cute monsters and lots of customization as with all the Innovative Mobile apps.
** Only the app's developer can control when an app is free or not. All apps that we post as Good Free Apps of the Day are verified to be free at the time of this post. We make no guarantees otherwise. **
Your child has the option of playing solo or there are multi-player modes for 2, 3 and 4 players.
Great for parents to play with kids, siblings to play together or for classmates to play together to reinforce social skills like turn-taking and sharing.
The music and sound effects are very Halloween appropriate and fun but you can turn them off in settings if you need to. Other settings allow you to adjust the time the cards are revealed to the player(s), whether play proceeds automatically and what size grid to start the game with.
Things start off pretty easily. Your child is shown a 3x3 grid (unless you select a different size in settings), the cards turn over and the monsters are revealed for 2 seconds (unless you reduce or increase the time in settings).
The cards turn back over and your child has to tap on the cards which have monsters underneath. If they remember all of them correctly then the number of monsters and the grid size increase. Make a mistake and the number of monsters decreases by 1.
If your child is doing well the game increases in difficulty pretty quickly - not only with the number of monsters shown but in addition, red herring items are thrown in which your child must not tap on, like flashlights and candy.
All in all, a fun, challenging game great to enjoy at this time of year and free!
