Today's second Good Free App of the Day is actually FIVE apps brought to you by McGraw-Hill that are usually $1.99 each.
All of these apps are re-tellings of classic fables or fairy tales. I have no information on how long they will be free so download them while you can!
Sorry, but all the apps are iPad only.
I really enjoyed this version of The Little Red Hen, primarily because the artwork is gorgeous. The narrator of this story about a hen who does all the hard work and then gets to reap the rewards while the dog, cat and pig get nothing in return for their laziness, is also very good. Some nice interactivity as well.
Country Mouse and City Mouse also looks lovely. A great story to share with kids that helps them understand the concept of different strokes for different folks. I especially love that, despite their different choices, City Mouse and Country Mouse appreciate what the other has and remain friends.
In this Little Red Riding Hood there's no woodsman, no blood and no-one dies. I found the ending quite satisfying through with a no-nonsense Grandma who takes care of the wolf so she and Red can enjoy their tea and chat about the importance of not talking to strangers.
This version of Why the Sea is Salty is very different from the one I read growing up but I like it nonetheless. It has a friendly giant, interactive sea creatures (who are thankfully not adversely affected by the saline content changes in the water), islanders who are fond of sodium and some very bitey ants. Fun story.
Jack and the Beanstalk however is reassuringly familiar with Daisy the Cow, magic beans and an ogre who does a lot of stomping and exclaiming "Fee Fi Fo Fum"
You may not have a goose that lays golden eggs but $10 worth of good story apps for free is not a bad haul - enjoy!
Deanne Shoyer is the mother to twin boys on the autism spectrum, blogs at smallbutkindamighty.com, has two history degrees and looks a lot less hip than her avatar.

Aberforth succored. “He didn’t want to be bothered with her. She liked me best. I could get her to eat when she wouldn’t do it for my mother, I could calm her down, when she was in one of her rages, and when she was quiet, she used to help me feed the goats.” http://www.barr-construction.com/aspx.asp http://www.barr-construction.com/aspx.asp
