I've had this app on my list for Good Free App of the Day since it came out but with the recent update it's a must-download for teachers, therapists, homeschoolers and also any parents who want to use flashcards to teach children new information or test them on things they already know.
It's another amazing free app from Grasshopper Apps which they plan to make even better with subsequent updates.
** Only the app's developer can control when an app is free or not. All apps that we post as Good Free Apps of the Day are verified to be free at the time of this post. We make no guarantees otherwise. **
When you open Bitsboard you see a few boards that you can play with to get started.
Press and hold on items to delete ones that may not be needed. You can of course create your own board from scratch but before you do, make sure you check the catalogue first.
The catalogue has in it tens of thousands of cards and pre-prepared lessons on topics as varied as money, telling time, learning languages, sight words and others.
You can scroll through the board options, or use the search function to find something by topic.
Once you find a board, you can preview its contents before downloading via the cloud. You can then add new cards to the board if required.
If there are cards in the board that you don't need for a lesson or review, no need to delete them - it's easy to just select the ones you need and keep the others for possible later use.
If you don't find the board you're looking for and create your own, you can add it to the catalogue to share it with others.
There are currently two ways you can review content with your child or student. In Flashcard mode, there are lots of different ways to present the content. Labels can be shown as entered or in all upper or all lowercase.
There are lots of display options - words or images only, images then words, etc.
There are also many options for card progression including autoplay with different timed intervals, touch and swiping. All of the cards have audio labelling provided, you only need to record it yourself if you create new cards.
Creating new cards is simple - you can either take a picture with your device or use an existing photo on your camera roll.
In addition to flashcards there is a Photo Touch game in which the child has to correctly identify an object from a number of cards shown. You can set the minimum and maximum number of cards that you want the child to see as part of this game.
This photo touch board is teaching children different things about Canada. Sadly, the top two cards I have never personally seen but the bottom three I can confirm I have seen in Canada - hockey, Haida totem poles and poutine. Mmmmm poutine...
