Developer Luca Lashes, LLC in conjunction with FlyingWord has created a series of books available as regular and enhanced ebooks and as interactive, narrated apps which help young children get through first experiences without fear and anxiety. The stories bring to mind the Froggy books by Jonathan London which helped prepare my ASD child for sleepaway camp at the tender age of six.
You may meet Luca and his dog Pete by downloading the introductory app Luca Lashes The Brown-Eyed Boy with Magic Eyelashes (Free, iPad/iPhone) using this handy link which also supports Smart Apps for Kids:
The series currently numbers five apps and covers haircuts, swim lessons, the dreaded dentist and tooth brushing in addition to the free app which introduces Luca and his preternaturally long magic lashes to readers. The apps are inspired by a real boy named Lucas and written by his parents Nicole and Damir Fonovich along with Camille Marie Tortorello. They are illustrated by Kim Stace Thomas and available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Chinese.
Over the next few weeks, through a series of reviews, we'll be joining Luca as he experiences these "firsts". Is he scared? Does he cry? Every parent has a story of a meltdown whether due to a novel experience or associated with the trauma of an unpleasant visit once before. The authors, one of whom has a Masters in Education degree, offer parents tips to minimize stress and hopefully lead to successful encounters.
If you have a youngster between the ages of 0 and 4 or a special needs child, these stories may save a lot of sad faces and help instill the confidence your child needs to face the unknown.
