Spell Bubbles-Bubble Wubble is a brand new spelling app from Ikonami Technologies.
Described as a social spelling quiz game, Bubble Wubble allows you to compare your spelling skills to others; classmates, siblings or others around the world.
There are over 500 words to spell and crisp, bright and sharp graphics show off each theme and setting for the different levels of the quiz.
And there's bubbles to pop. It seems to be a universal fact that kids like popping bubbles, mine definitely do. Suffice to say then that this app engaged my kids immediately.
Pop, pop, pop.
Spell Bubbles starts off gently but becomes increasingly more challenging as you work through the levels. Before you move up a level, you need to spell five words correctly. You begin by tapping the audio clip which lets you know which words to spell, then you pop the bubbles that hold the letters that make up the word. If you don't hear the word the first time round you can listen to it again (as many times as you want). You can gain more points by popping bonus bubbles but you can also lose points by hitting the incorrect ones. There's also a bonus round where you can play to get more points.
The words tie in nicely to the corresponding back scenes you play on and there are four different worlds to explore. Fishing for Words is the first one open and features all sorts of oceanic and aquatic type words. There's also Words in Space, Spells Magic, and my favourite, Caves of Spells.
My children are competitive - I don't know where they get it from - but they loved the competitive aspect of this app. There is a leader scoreboard on the Bubble Wubble site with a Hall of Fame for spellers with the highest score. That is now the goal in my house - to see who can get their name on the site first. Poor Tot, she doesn't stand a chance.
The app is described as suitable for 4-11 year olds.It works for the younger audience as even though they may not be proficient spellers, there is still lots to appeal to them; letter recognition, different vocabulary and correct pronunciation. But the 8 year old and 14 year old in my house really enjoyed and benefitted from every aspect of this app.
If you'd like to download Spell Bubbles -Bubble Wubble (I love the name of this app), please use the link below. It's $1.99 and available for iPhone and iPad.
