I’ve got to say, I felt a little bit old when I realized that Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber are celebrating their 20th birthday. But I regained my youthful exuberance immediately upon hearing the dulcet tones of Larry singing “Barbara Manateeeeeeee . . .” I know that Veggie Tales are generally geared toward younger children, but this Silly Song app is fun for the whole family.
We love Veggie Tales videos at our house, and by far our favorite part is always Silly Songs with Larry. So when an app came along that is nothing but our favorite Silly Songs, well, we just got positively giddy. If you are a fan of Veggie Tales, I am betting you will feel the same way. Watch & Find: Veggie Tales Silly Song Favorites, available from Weeblets and the Fingerprint Network, includes the following Silly Songs:
- The Hairbrush Song
- The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything
- I Love My Lips
- Endangered Love (Barbara Manatee)
- The Water Buffalo Song
- His Cheeseburger
- Sneeze if You Need To
- Pizza Angel
- Happy Toothday
They’ll be updating the app periodically throughout this birthday year and adding additional songs. Right now we can see that Song of the Cebu, Bubble Wrap, and Sippy Cup are just waiting for future updates.
It's true that Veggie Tales videos generally have a religious spin, but the Silly Songs don't. So even if the religious aspect isn't your thing, don't shy away from this app, which is just straight-up fun regardless of what you believe.
Each video is a classic, with Larry singing one of his trademark Silly Songs. For sheer entertainment, this would be enough, but the developers have also added a hidden object game into the mix. As the title implies, your little one can “Watch & Find” items as each song plays. Each video has 12 separate items for your child to search for. As they find and tap the items, users are given lots of positive reinforcement in the form of verbal praise from Larry. At the end of each video, the user is given an overall score and more verbal encouragement.
The Watch & Find game is a really nice way to help your kiddos with visual information processing. I find that sometimes my seven-year-old has difficulty slowing down and paying attention to details, whether he’s watching a video, reading a book, or simply having a conversation with someone. Because it was presented in such a fun way as part of the Veggie Tales Silly Songs, the attention span help slipped right by my kiddo — he didn’t even realize that he was actually paying better attention. Nurturing this skill will help with many of his classes at school, and every little bit helps.
But if your kiddo is too young for the Watch & Find game, or just doesn’t want to play, the app is still just fun the whole family can enjoy. With ten silly songs to choose from, there is something for everyone.
If I had to find fault in this app, I guess I would have to say that occasionally as we (well, I) were singing along, we (again, I) would get so wrapped up in the songs that we (OK, me again) would forget to search for the items. Is that a fault or just a “hazard” of how entertaining Veggie Tales can be? Hard to call it a fault when it is just so fun.
Go on and download this app. Then come sing Barbara Manatee with me.
