Back in September of 2012 our beloved Grand Poobah graced our site to tell you from his own point of view about Dr. Panda's Restaurant. I am really excited to be the one to tell you that Dr. Panda is back in his very first sequel. Dr. Panda's Restaurant 2 features the same hungry friends and the same chef Panda, only this time they've gone tropical.
When your tot first opens up this newest app from developer Tribe Play, a simple tap on the large green "play" button whisks her away to Dr. Panda's newest franchise locale, a remote island tiki hut. So remote, in fact, that customers can only arrive by boat two at a time. When customers arrive, she can tap them to get them off the boat. From there they seat themselves (which is different from the first app) and place their order. Pressing on one of the guests takes your sous chef off to the kitchen to get things going.
Inside the restaurant, your cherub goes through the entire cooking process, start to finish, of whatever food was ordered. This is where great graphics are at their best - the food looks real and kitchen utensils are true to their real life functions. Your kid will cut, roll, stir, fry, chop, grate and blend to his heart's content. I was really impressed at the way Dr. Panda's kitchen has changed. After ingredients are chosen, almost the entire cooking area is at your child's disposal. I sauteed an eggplant this morning and then I baked it, just because I could.
In his review of this app's predecessor, Ron couldn't have loved it more except for the fact that really unhealthy foods were on the menu far too often. I can happily report that that concern is no longer an issue inside this sequel - all the hungry animal friends order are typical foods that you would approve of if your child asked for them. Pizza, pasta, stir-fry, and soup are all that Dr. Panda can have shipped to this remote location where he's cooking in now, so that's what he serves.
From an educational standpoint, there are a lot of things I can and will use this app to target. As a speech therapist I'm always looking for apps that are versatile. With this app I can address concepts like vocabulary building, role-playing as there is no speaking in the app, following directions, sequencing, and verbs out the wazoo.
As a staff we often joke about all the jobs Dr. Panda holds, and why he would need to hold that many jobs, and how on earth he manages to do them all AND be home in time for dinner. Nevertheless this lovable panda is back again with an app that is worthy to hold the Dr. Panda name. If your kiddos are fans of Dr. Panda's original restaurant, or any of the other Dr. Panda apps for that matter, then you absolutely do not want to miss this.
