If you have an artistic child who enjoys coloring and creating, then Picotoons Coloring Book is for you. From the developers at Bigobjuo comes this app that will appeal to children of all ages. This interactive coloring book was designed for children from ages 3 to 8, but I would argue that children older than 8 would also enjoy it. In fact, my 9 year old has been found returning to this app again and again!
The app has a number of strengths, including the illustrations and the varying levels of interface. First, the illustrations are organized into different books based on themes, including animals, occupations, fairies and friends, robots, and creatures. The black and white illustrations are whimsical and offer something for children with a variety of interests.
The app has been designed for children who have different ability levels, which means that this app can grow with your child. An adult user can adjust the level as needed in the settings area. The beginner level allows children to use a fill tool to color in certain areas of the illustration by selecting one color at a time. This is perfect for younger children who want to successfully color one of the coloring pages. The Intermediate level allows children access to more tools such as fill, stickers, paint, and eraser. This allows children the ability to fill areas like in the beginner level, but the paint option also allows children the ability to color or draw freehand. The advanced level gives children access to all of the tools, including those from the intermediate level as well as pencil, crayon, and special effects.
There are additional capabilities that can be found in the app, similar to those found in many other drawing programs. There are erase or undo features, and the ability to save the images. As with nearly any app we'd rate a Top Pick, there is also the ability to turn off the music and the special effects sounds.
There is a sketchbook aspect of this app, which offers creative opportunities for children to do more than color an existing illustration. While the sketchbook is not available for beginners, it is accessible for intermediate and advanced users. offering options such as blank pages, frames, googly eyes, and more. There are many sketchbook pages that can spark creativity in different children.
Technology offers possibilities that crayons and paper can’t, and this app capitalizes on these possibilities in ways that many other coloring and drawing apps don't. Some of the tools are based on real life tools, such as the crayon, stickers and eraser. But the power of technology allows the app to offer things that kids would never find in real life, such as the magic particles tool, the fill tool and more. In addition, the eraser always erases completely. How many real-life erasers can do that?
This developer has put children’s privacy at the forefront, and it has resulted in a safe, child-friendly app. There are no in-app purchases, no required log in information, and no links out of the app. Also, there are child locks on the settings area and they can be applied to other areas as needed. Specifically, parents can turn the autosave feature off, which means our photo roll doesn’t get inadvertently filled.
The Picotoons Coloring app is an excellent coloring app for children of all ages who enjoy art and creative play. Highly recommended.
