Bottom Line: Croco Studio is at it again. This time they’ve given us an app for the little artists in our lives. ToyBrush 3D is a delightful outlet for your kiddo’s creative mind. Users can decorate any one of 21 toys in endless combinations of colors and patterns. What a nice little gift this app would make for Christmas!

It was like Santa came a bit early to my house this year when ToyBrush 3D from Croco Studio showed up on our iPads. I make no secret of the fact that I am a huge fan of their apps, and ToyBrush 3D didn’t disappoint.
The appearance and handling of this app give the same feeling as Croco Studio’s Build & Play series, which is a great thing. Upon opening the app, the user gets to choose one of multiple items to “play” with, except in this case the play is actually painting and decorating each item. And there are 21 different entertaining toys to choose from. That is a LOT of fun just waiting to happen.
As the user picks a toy, he is offered the option to decorate one from scratch or to choose one that has been previously saved and add more detail to it. After choosing which one he wants to use, his house (or giraffe or ice cream or rocket ship . . .) appears in 3D on a platform. This platform rotates 360 degrees and can be tilted forward and backward so that every angle of each toy is not only visible but easily accessible as well.
Your little artist can then choose from some fairly traditional coloring tools (i.e. brushes with varying thicknesses and a magic fill option) along with the option to “paint” on some really great patterns. I just love that option — with a simple brush stroke you can turn your solid pink snail into a houndstooth patterned mollusk. After your kiddo has her toy colored to suit her tastes, she can then embellish away with a vast array of stickers. From eyes and noses to a pirate skull and crossbones, there are stickers to fill every little desire. Plus there are people stickers that make it possible to put drivers in the car, train, and boat toys or just to have somebody waving out the window of your gingerbread house.
As far as an art/coloring type app goes, ToyBrush is top notch. I’ve reviewed several of Croco Studio’s apps over the last couple of years and with each new release I rejoice at how they are continually building and improving their apps to serve their target market better. Little details make such a difference in kids’ apps, particularly those geared toward the preschool market. For example, a younger three-year-old might not quite yet have the manual dexterity to really control the rotation and tilting of the toys and could become pretty frustrated when their colors don’t end up where they want them to be. Well, you know what? Croco Studio thought about that and they put in a toddler setting that locks the free rotation and holds the toy still for coloring. Perfect.
They’ve also included some nice options, like an undo button so that kids can get rid of any “oopsies.” There is the ability to mute the background music and the app sounds individually, which is nice. And I love the button that allows you to just wipe the whole thing clean and start over.
Normally, I’d ding an app’s star rating if it gets up into the $2.99 price range, because I’m kind of a cheapskate and think that if an app costs almost three bucks it should be pretty stellar. I usually think of the superstar apps (Toca Boca, Dr. Panda and the glorious Bugs & Buttons, for example) as being my benchmark for a $3 app. I’ve got to say, though, I think Croco Studio is getting right up there now. I would have no problem recommending this app at full price.
I wonder if next Christmas they would make me a holiday version of this lovely little app so that I can decorate a tree?
