OK, y’all, I’ll be the first to admit that when I’m assigned an alphabet app to review I generally sigh a bit and steel myself for boredom and frustration. Because, generally, alphabet apps are basically all the same, right? (Particularly animal alphabet apps, but don’t get me started on that.) Imagine my delight, then, to discover the newly released Zooper ABC Animals and find that none of my usual fears would be realized here.
Upon opening the app, our home page is a splash screen of the entire alphabet. You can start off with A, or just get wild and pick a random letter. Whichever you choose, you will be presented with a cute little rhyme and animation for your chosen letter. After delighting in this page for a moment (be sure to click around in the scene several times, because there are many different interactive surprises and sound effects hidden in each page), let’s look around and see what else is going on.
At the top of the page, we see three heading options. The capital letter option takes us to the page we have just been enjoying. But there are two other options, a dotted outline of the letter and a selection of multiples of the same letter. Let’s see what those do.
The dotted outline of the letter takes us to a page where your little one can practice tracing both the capital and lowercase letter that you have chosen. This is a pretty basic little letter tracing practice activity.
The icon with multiples of the same letter take us to a page with multiple outlines of objects that all begin with our chosen letter. As we tap on each, the object appears and we hear the word said out loud. This is great exposure to help kids realize that some of our letters can make different sounds. There are several fun, unique items provided for each letter.
BONUS! After you tap on each object in the “more things that begin with” section, a little clapper-board icon appears up to the left of the screen. By tapping on this icon, we get to see a funny little “blooper” reel for each letter. What a fun little reward for completing each letter!

What I liked:
- This is a fun, fresh, well-made app that is sure to stand out in the crowded alphabet app market.
- Seriously? Those bloopers completely cracked my kids (and me) up. So fun.
- In the tracing section, it would be really great if there were an undo/erase option and perhaps some kind of acknowledgement when the letters have been traced properly.
- When working within the same letter, I found that if you chose to go back to the first page (the one with the rhyme and animation) you were not given the option of hearing the rhyme again. It would be great if you could tap the rhyme to hear it again.
Zooper ABC Animals is as well made of an alphabet app as I have ever come across. The illustrations are adorable, and the quality of the production is top notch. I happily award this app a 5 star rating and welcome it into our Top Pick family!
Kelli is not quite ready for the weekend...hahaha! She also cracks herself up. Smart Apps for Kids was paid a fee to publish this review in a priority manner.
