Bottom Line: A very useful social studies app for homeschoolers and teachers. Not a game, but educational vignettes of children from different countries which give a peek into their everyday life.

The base app is free, and each “issue” (1 month) is $4.99. A whole year of Timbuktu on your iPad (only) is $29.99.

Bottom line: a terrific introduction to current events with unlimited potential for repeated use for kids ages 7-10. Definitely worth the $6.99 per month subscription price, but you can view three issues in a free trial.

Bottom line: an incredibly well done and fun app with an amazing amount of information for amateur paleontologists. Who knew minerals, fossils and dinosaurs could be so much fun?

Bottom Line: an interesting concept that needs deeper educational content and better structure to make it worth discovering. Limited appeal for ages over 6. Free to try.

Kids Planet Discovery

 

 

Bottom Line: An apt name for an app which introduces many of the wonderful animals, cultures, places and music that make up our world. Download is free with additional segments available through in-app purchases.

Bottom Line: If Bugs and Buttons changed your expectations of what you can get in an app, this little gem goes one step further and changes what parents and teachers can expect from elementary school education. It's as fun as it is informative and well deserving of Smart Apps for Kids' highest honor.
